Nabechan
Nabechan's current art practice is deeply rooted in themes that directly connect to her post-internet environment and her experiences growing up in the high-tech, consumerist, and pop megalopolis that is Tokyo.
In her artistic endeavors, there is a distinct focus on (female) teenagers whose self-identity becomes a delicate balancing act between the yearning for external approval and the nurturing of their own egos. The core of Nabechan's art revolves around an exploration of how the identity of the current generation is profoundly shaped by the ever-evolving standards of beauty, the pervasive influence of social media, and the prevalent aesthetics of pop culture and consumerism.
Nabechan holds a strong belief that the phenomenon of social media will continue to swell and exert even greater influence in the future. Consequently, she views her artistic work as becoming increasingly relevant over time as it offers a critical lens through which to examine these societal dynamics. To express the intricate and multifaceted nature of this phenomenon, Nabechan employs vinyl layers in her art, which serve as a visual representation of the complex interplay between individuals and their digital personas.
Drawing inspiration from pop culture, she incorporates visual elements that resonate with contemporary audiences. She leverages the 2D qualities intrinsic to print and screen-based media to effectively communicate her message. Additionally, as a reference to consumer aesthetics, Nabechan often integrates 'low-brow' materials such as glitter, stickers, and plastics into her artwork. These materials not only enrich the texture of her creations but also serve as a poignant commentary on the omnipresent consumerist culture that plays a significant role in shaping the lives of the individuals depicted in her art.
